Clinkham Wood Nature Reserve

Clinkham Wood Community Woodland is a large urban clough woodland of 7.26 hectares located north of St.Helens, boasting four large adjoining amenity grassland areas, and woodland containing a meadow, informal paths, seating, spring-fed stream, glade areas and large drifts of Bluebells in flower each Spring.

Clinkham Wood has been a green space since the Industrial Revolution. In Moss Bank quarrying and nail - making went on along side farming of potatoes, wheat and oats and a community built up around it. Nail - making died out around 1900.

A sculpture trail and sensory trail increase the opportunity for both abled and less abled visitors to explore the woodland.

Clinkham Wood is one of 7 parks in St.Helens that has achieved the national Green Flag awards which recognise and reward the best green spaces in the country.

Existing Green Flags are at Bankes Park at Billinge, Clinkham Wood Local Nature Reserve, Siding Lane Local Nature Reserve at Rainford and Mesnes Park at Newton have been retained and a further three have been gained at Taylor Park, The Duckeries at Parr and Downall Croft Doorstep Green at North Ashton.

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. It was introduced in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.
