The building is steeped in a long and fascinating history. For hundreds of years, the ‘Leigh family’ were landowners in Newton-le-Willows and its environs.

The Ram’s head, which stands proudly atop the restaurant, is the crest of that family. It has also given the restaurant its name - ‘Ariete’ is Italian for ‘Ram’.

What is today the entrance to the restaurant was originally the gateway into Haydock Park Racecourse. When the archway became too narrow for the increasingly wide coaches, it was donated to the former ‘Council of Newton-le-Willows’ as an entrance to the local market.
