Town centre treat for soccer fans
10th June 2010
Robot soccer comes to St.Helens
Warm up for England’s World Cup opener with the USA this Saturday by taking charge of your own robotic football team in Church Square.
Robotsoccer will be one of the highlights of an England Football Day in the square – complete with bunting, giveaways, England flags and cheering crowds.
Robotsoccer promises the euphoria of goalscoring – without the exertion of taking to the pitch.
The game comes from the makers of TV’s Robot Wars.
It’s all part of the Football Association’s drive to get everyone behind the national team as they bid for World Cup glory in South Africa.
There will also be soccer-themed street entertainment, football freestylers and facepainting - in both Church Square and St Mary’s Market. St Mary’s market traders will also enter customers spending over £1 into a prize draw to win a superb 42” LCD TV.
Councillor Barrie Grunewald, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communications and Town Centre, said: “The day promises to get everyone in the mood for the big kick-off on Saturday night.
As well as being a treat for football fans, it will be a winner for town centre traders and retailers too – with hundreds of extra people expected to visit shops and businesses on the day.”
The England Football kicks off at 11am in Church Square – with the final whistle due at 4pm.
