International visitors power into St.Helens

International visitors at Carr Mill Dam St.Helens

 The usually calm waters at picturesque Carr Mill Dam in St.Helens came alive with junior powerboat racers from across the globe on 13th – 15th August, all battling it out for a place on the winners’ podium at the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) Formula Future World and Continental Powerboat Racing Championship.

This prestigious Championship which takes place annually around the world, saw some 80 international competitors, aged 8-18 years, from Great Britain, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Germany, Slovakia and 2009 champions Russia competing for the top prize, at one of St.Helens most scenic rural attractions.

The German team took the crown for both the Continental and World Champion Cups, and also picked up the Ralph Froeling Challenge Cup.

Ruth Morse, Commodore of the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club based at Carr Mill Dam said: “We are delighted that the championship has come to the UK this year and in particular Carr Mill Dam which is an ideal venue for this event. It’s gives us a unique opportunity to have the competitors try out our junior powerboats and hopefully bring some new blood into the sport.”

Councillor Barrie Grunewald, Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Culture, Communications and Town Centre at St.Helens Council commented: “It’s fantastic that St.Helens is hosting this exciting international event in recognition of our world-class sporting offer and facilities. It has an important economic value to the tourism industry in St.Helens and it’s great to see visitors from around the globe experiencing the marvellous attractions and accommodation the borough has to offer.”

Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club can provide powerboat training to youngsters in club equipment for under £50 a session, providing both children (age 9-15 depending on height) and parents the chance to see if they take to the sport before purchasing any equipment.
