Billinge Village
St.Helens
Merseyside

Billinge Hill is the highest point in Merseyside, which on a clear day affords panoramic views across the Cheshire Plain, extending to the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales, Winter Hill to the north-east, Derbyshire's Peak District to the south and even to Blackpool Tower over thirty miles away.

Billinge Hill was also used by the Royal Observer Corps, and there was a bunker at the site, 60 yards West of and below Beacon. The Beacon itself was used for aircraft observation during and after the war. The bunker would have been used to monitor the location of nuclear blasts and the resulting fallout over Lancashire in the event of nuclear war. The post opened in January 1960 and closed in October 1968.

Road Directions

Billinge is located by road approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) southwest of Wigan and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northeast of St Helens.
